GuRu is packed with more than 80 beautiful photographs that illustrate the concept of building the life you want from the outside in and the inside out. "You’re born naked and the rest is drag." As someone who has deconstructed life’s hilarious facade, RuPaul has broken "the fourth wall" to expand on the concept of mind, body, and spirit. This unique perspective has allowed RuPaul to break the shackles of self-imposed limitations, but reader beware, this is a daily practice that requires diligence and touchstones to keep you walking in the sunshine of the spirit. Once you’re willing to look beyond the identity that was given to you, a hidden world of possibilities will open its doors. Throughout the history of humans on this planet, there’ve always been shaman, seers, and mediums who are able to interpret both high and low frequencies and remind humans to look beyond the surface for the truth of who we really are. And who we really are is an extension of the power that created the universe (aka: God in drag). FYI: most people are not willing to hear or accept that. That is RuPaul’s secret for success, not only in show business, but in all aspects of life, especially in navigating the emotional landmines that inhibit most sweet, sensitive souls. If you think this book is just about "doing drag," you are sorely mistaken because for RuPaul, drag is merely a device to deactivate the identity-based ego and allow space for the unlimited.

The audio book was adorable. Hearing Ru laugh and the emotion behind the stories was well worth the listen. They referenced the photos in the book, which I have ordered a copy of, and I can't wait to see them. I highly suggest getting both to get the full experience. The tales and advice given are great and worth hearing.

Most of the books I have read until now have been by straight white upper middle class American males about other straight white upper middle class American males. Occasionally I'll deviate by one or two descriptors such as straight black poor American males or straight white upper middle class American female but the point is my views are limited by what I read. Occasionally I'll deviate by one or two descriptors such as straight black poor American males or straight white upper middle class American female but the point is my views are limited by what I read. While there are of course many different perspectives within that group (of which I am a part) and its ilk I figured it's probably best to branch out a little. So, with 5 minutes before I boarded a 7 hour flight home, I went through the google book store on my phone to see if I could find something a little different. Lucky me that GuRu by Mr. RuPaul Charles awaited me as one of the first books available. it's not quite the poor lesbian Australian aboriginal at one with nature that I imagine I should be reading but it would have to do for the flight. I forked over my $11 to the almighty google machine with the hope that I get into the life of America's premier drag queen and his exploits. Perhaps I was naive to think that this would be a deep look into Mr. RuPaul himself, but regardless I was very disappointed. For starters, the book is, when you remove all the photos and bad formatting, maybe between 2,000-3,000 words. it's basically a long magazine article which goes about a paragraph deep into a dozen random topics. to put it bluntly, it felt like when high schoolers have to meet page length requirements so they pad the margins and increase the font size of the punctuation to reach an acceptable length. there's so little actual writing it's infuriating. As I imagine it, some editor asked him to write "the next big self help book" but he didn't have time so instead of postponing or canceling the project he handed over a few days of journal entries about advice and the book editor pulled this together somehow. It jumps from photos of himself to weirdly bold quotes to short paragraphs about topics that have nothing to do with one another (I suspect that reading on a phone formatted it poorly). There's a nugget of wisdom here and there but overall it's a weird stream of consciousness from RuPaul about how to live your life. It's like walking into a gift shop that only carries items with either drag queen photos or bad self help quotes from the last 10 years. This isn't to say that there aren't moments of real human interest. I'm sure a fully fleshed out biography of him or extended interview would be interesting. There are some things in there that I would love to hear him expand on, including "As drag queens, it's our job to mock the hypocrisy, mediocrity, and absurdity of society", when he mentions how his notions of gender were formed, or about his ideas on how to educate young people. he has a lot of wisdom, but this book does not say it well. I have a lot of respect for RuPaul and everything he's done but he can do better than this.

Mama Ru shares her wisdom. She takes heat sometimes for not being "warm" but I say kudos to her for being shrewd.

Figuratively speaking, "GuRu" is a coloring book. — RuPaul provides the scaffolding of a self-help book by sharing what works for him (i.e. meditation / self respect / love) in filling his own life with color, asks readers to use every last color in their own 96 pack of crayolas to make their own lives more radiant, and tells them not to worry about any societal expectations that we stay within certain lines. — Literally speaking, you may be disappointed with "GuRu" if you just want a coloring b Figuratively speaking, "GuRu" is a coloring book. — Literally speaking, you may be disappointed with "GuRu" if you just want a coloring book. — Here's the list of "Must Read Books" as suggested by Mentor-Ru in the end notes of "GuRu": A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson Toxic Parents by Dr. Susan Forward The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle My Life So Far by Jane Fonda Magical Thinking by Augusten Burroughs Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

You might want a pen and paper handy when you read this - there will be quotes you will want to jot down. I got the audiobook, and I found it a bit disappointing that in the beginning it mentioned that if you wish to see the photos mentioned throughout the book you would have to buy the hardcover or e-book versions. With other audiobooks I've read that heavily reference photos that are featured in the hardcover/paperback/e-book version, there will generally be a downloadable pdf file that comes with the audiobook - which I think is a good way to go about including the material, rather than having to buy a whole different extra copy of the same book in a different format. Because of that, you might feel like you're missing out on some things if you only have the audiobook. With that said, if I *had* gotten a physical copy of this book I would have a hard time finding the right place for it on my bookshelf...Of course, I would want to shelve it with my other RuPaul books (in the cross-over area of memoir and lgbtq), but if we're talking in terms of content I think it would fit well right next to Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

I bought this book from Premier Collectibles through a Facebook ad. lol They had autographed copies so I thought, why not? It turned out to be a photobook, not an autobiography like I thought. The cover is velvety and feels expensive. The pages are glossy and every page is a photo of Ru in her best drag, except the last page which shows Rupaul himself sans makeup. At the end is a list of Rupaul's recommended reads, listens, and watches. This book wasn't what I was expecting. It's a very quick read but the pictures are worth ogling so I would recommend it mostly for people who love the looks but aren't in it for a biographical story. The little bits of texts on each page are pretty uplifting and self-affirming, though, so all in all it's a feel-good book I enjoyed reading with pictures I enjoyed admiring.

Lovely and Wise I haven't read a self-help book in years, but after hearing Ru's interview on Fresh Air I knew I had to read this book. I'm not a particular fan of drag and had only seen RuPaul occasionally in a movie. I suppose much of the wisdom in this book is recycled from other sources, but seeing them through the eyes of Ru and the medium of drag puts a whole new spin on things. For whatever reason seeing The Human Condition through the lens of drag makes surprising sense and sings to me. Thank you, Ru. I'm off now to meditate and then dance.

Absolutely stunning photography of an absolute icon. I loved all the beautiful, powerful quotes which I plan on filling my journal up with, so I can refer to them frequently in my own life/journey. A book filled with all the colours in the crayon box and so much positivity, guidance, smiles, mindfulness and love. I recommend this book to everyone. ‘Your soul is made of stars 🌟 We are all stars.’ ~RuPaul 💖

Need something fun to read, beautiful pictures to look at and also positive and uplifting...check out RuPaul’s new book Guru!!! This is a quick read by the world famous “shape shifter” who shares daily practices and truths to live by. As someone that has made a successful career on being different and putting that out there, this book will make you smile and remind you it’s going to be ok! And yes he is fierce!! I enjoyed it! 🤗

I love Ru...but this was less fully fleshed book and more short snippets and random thoughts. If this were the actual book and not the Kindle version, it would get 3 stars for the gorgeous gorgeous photos, but the detail gets lost in an ebook.

A quick dive into the habits & practices of Mama Ru. And while GuRu doesn’t really break down any essential truths or act as a stand-alone self-help manual, it’s always a good day when you hear from RuPaul.

Read this in half an hour, so you can guess how much actual content there is. Lots of badly edited photos and the layout looks very 'student graphic designer' at times. However, I got a signed copy, so it gets an extra star from me. Cute for fans of Ru.
